Martin Molamphy, with his beautiful family, helped to build Judes, and when news came through at the weekend of his passing, it was met with a flow of tributes to a true friend. We send our deepest condolences to Joan, Mark and Paul.
Martin was here in the years when the Club had very little in terms of pitches and facilities, but he gave his energy and time, and put all his heart in to creating the Club that we all enjoy today.
He was at the core of building hurling in our Club – on the management team of our first Adult Championship winners in 1989. One ex-player recalled that when Martin was coaching he always said that when you were taking a shot that you should aim for the left post. Better to go wide on the right side of the posts than the left !
He put in the hard yards of serving on various committees to help get things done. He was the Chair of Adult Games in the early 1990's. He held many senior positions on the Executive, including Vice Chairman from 1994 to 1996 and as Chairman from 1997 to 1999. This was at a crucial time in the Club’s development - his energy and desire to get things done are appreciated.
A Tipp man who never forgot his roots - very proud of his Portroe heritage. Having played hurling with De la Salle in Waterford, he came to Dublin in the early 1970's, playing Junior hurling with Dundrum/Churchtown, with our own clubman Michael Ryan of Rossmore. Shortly afterwards he left for South Africa, returning in the 80's, settling locally with his beloved Joan. Joan’s friendships and roles in the Club are testament to the family’s deep connection to Judes. He loved watching Mark and Paul play in Tymon and was always lively company on a sideline.
As a dedicated teacher, and Principal, he managed the early days of the fledgling schools in Kilnamanagh of St Kilian’s and St Kevin’s. A keen golfer who loved playing Castlewarden and other courses, with our Golf Society. Loved his card games, especially Bridge, enjoying the Thursday night Card sessions.
Martin, we will miss your wise counsel, and your welcoming smile. We have lost a great friend.
