The unbeaten St Judes minor Hurlers will travel to Portumna tomorrow to take on the locals in the The Joe O'Meara Memorial Cup. The game is on at the Portumna GAA grounds and throw in is at 7.00pm, below is an article printed in the Connaught Tribune to promote the event. Good Luck to all involved and hopefully we will bring the trophy back across the Shannon.
Portumna GAA host St. Jude's GAA, Templeogue, Dublin in a revival of an event to commemorate Joe O'Meara, a brilliant young Portumna hurler tragically killed in January 1991. The Cup is a perpetual trophy and will be contested for annually by both clubs. The Cup and medals are being sponsored by Joe's cousin Colum Grogan a former Portumna GAA player and now a prominent member of the St. Jude's GAA club and a selector with their present Minor hurlers. Their team manager is Sean Fallon who is also from East Galway origins, his late father Jackie being a native of the adjacent parish of Abbey and Sean and his family like the Grogan family are frequent visitors to the area.
Although playing in the Minor B league in Dublin this year the St. Jude's boys have already secured promotion to Division 1 next year having romped through the Div 2 league by playing eleven games and winning them all by very impressive margins. Three of their team, Tom Devlin, Shane Gibbons and Fionn O'Riain are members of the Dublin Minor hurling panel the current Leinster champions.
The Portumna and St. Jude's connection goes back to 1990 when they first competed in the inaugural and now extremely popular St. Jude's All-Ireland Hurling 7's. The following year Portumna won that competition with a team including the Treacy brothers, Sean, Vinnie, Stephen and Pearse as well as the older Canning brothers, Seamus, Frank and Davy. Current Portumna GAA Chairman Damian Coleman (a close boyhood friend of Joe O'Meara) won the coveted St. Jude's All-Ireland Hurling 7's Laoch an Lae Award in that 1991 competition victory.
The St. Jude's club has hosted the Portumna Squad for breakfast on all their All-Ireland Club final visits to Croke Park and facilitated their pre match training routines which greatly assisted their preparations on those memorable days.
Apart from Portumna minor hurlers visit next year lets hope the Portumna seniors will be the guests of St. Jude's once again on St. Patricks day 2013.
